Chapter VII

The Moon

We saved the best for last. Earth's Moon is unusually large relative to the size of the planet. That matters. The Moon helps stabilize Earth's axial tilt, which contributes to long-term climate stability. Without that stabilization, Earth may experience chaotic swings in climate over long periods of time.

The Moon also drives tides throughout the oceans. Many scientists believe tidal regions may have played an important role in the development of early biological systems.

Even the night sky itself has been shaped by this companion world. Human civilization has organized calendars, navigation, agriculture, and rituals around its cycles for thousands of years. The Moon is not merely beautiful. It's essential. This isn't physical evidence of God. It's just worth noting the Moon's pivotal role in our history. There is however one notable piece of physical evidence that trumps all other evidence when it comes to our Moon. This evidence is visually stunning.

Total Solar Eclipse

In this image, the Sun is behind the Moon. Their apparent sizes are approximately the same so that these phenomena occur. The Moon just so happens to be at the perfect distance from Earth so that the apparent sizes of the Moon and the Sun are the same. The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon. Remarkably, it is also about 400 times farther away from Earth. Because of this extraordinary proportion, the Sun and Moon appear nearly the same size in our sky. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun and covers the solar disk almost perfectly, leaving only the Sun's outer atmosphere visible.

There is no necessary physical law requiring this alignment. The Moon does not have to be the size it is. It does not have to orbit at this distance. The Sun does not have to stand at this apparent scale in our sky. And yet, from Earth, the two great lights appear matched with breathtaking precision. The result is one of the most astonishing sights in nature: the Moon, our nearest celestial companion, perfectly veiling the face of the Sun. For a universe supposedly indifferent to us, it is a strange and beautiful coincidence. Not proof of God. But evidence. A sign. A whisper written in the heavens. If you haven't seen a total solar eclipse in person, they are quite the sight to see. God arranged for our Moon to be in orbit at just the right distance so we could experience these awesome events. There is one particular aspect of these events that is notable. It's the diamond ring effect. It occurs twice for every total solar eclipse. Once as the Moon first eclipses the Sun. And then again when the Moon is moving away from the Sun.

THE DIAMOND RING — God's proposal to His Church, visible for only a few seconds

Diamond ring effect. View of the diamond ring effect seen during a partial phase of the total solar eclipse which occurred on February 26th 1998. This effect may be seen for a few seconds just before or after the totality when only a tiny fragment of the solar disc is visible. The solar corona is visible as a green halo around the solar disc. It is a region of low density and temperature of about 1 million Kelvin. The solar corona is usually undetectable due to the overwhelming brightness of the inner region of the solar atmosphere known as the photosphere. Photographed from Aruba in the West Indies.

The diamond ring events occur just before totality and just after totality. God arranged for our Moon to be in orbit at just the right distance so that these diamond ring events would occur. They symbolize the marriage of the Church to His Son. Jesus proposes to us every time one of these occurs.

And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink." Jesus answered them, "Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days."

— Luke 5:33–35

Jesus is declaring that he is the one who marries the Church. That he is the bridegroom. The diamond ring effect is representative of Christ's proposal to us. There will never be coercive proof of God in nature. That was never the point. Love does not compel. Love invites. But if you have walked this path with us, from the atom to the nucleus, from quantum mystery to the finely tuned constants, from Earth's astonishing habitability to the silent witness of the Moon, then perhaps you have heard what creation has been whispering all along. Not a mathematical certainty. But a call. A signature. An invitation. If something within you has risen, do not ignore it. Go to a Catholic Church. Sit in the silence. Speak honestly to God, even if you are unsure He is there. "Lord, if this is truly You, show me what You want from my life." Then listen. If you are being called home, ask about OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). Begin the journey. Not because this book proved anything to you. It didn't. But because the evidence became an invitation. The universe is vast beyond comprehension. Galaxies beyond counting. Laws of astonishing precision. Mysteries layered upon mysteries. And yet, somehow, in all that immensity, the possibility remains that you were personally sought. Personally loved. Personally invited.

This book has argued that creation bears signs of intention. Christianity goes further. Creation whispers. Christ speaks. It claims the Designer entered the design. That the Author entered the story. That Truth took flesh. And if that is true, then the greatest discovery awaiting you is not in physics. It is in a Person. Now go and seek Him.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
